Best Restaurants in West Maui: Where to Eat in 2025

Updated August 2025 – Firsthand Insights from Post-Fire Visits

I’ve been coming to Maui for nearly 20 years, and in the past two years, I’ve made two post-fire visits to West Maui—including Kāʻanapali. This guide reflects my most recent trip in March 2025, during which I revisited these restaurants, spoke with staff, and gathered firsthand updates.

Table of Contents

While Lahaina Town was tragically destroyed in the 2023 wildfire, many beloved spots in Kāʻanapali and the surrounding area are open, thriving, and deeply appreciative of visitors who choose to support local.

You’ll find a mix of oceanfront views, laid-back lunches, date-night spots, and casual bites—each with notes on what’s open as of August 2025 and any changes I noticed while dining there myself.

Dinner in Kāʻanapali isn’t just a meal—it’s a whole Maui moment. Think golden sunsets, slack-key guitar in the background, and fresh island fish paired with a mai tai.

After nearly 20 years of dining here, I’ve tasted it all—from hidden gems to oceanfront icons. Whether you’re after a romantic dinner, a kid-friendly spot, or happy hour pupus after the beach, Kāʻanapali has plenty to offer.

Whether you’re after oceanfront dining in Kāʻanapali, a family-friendly restaurant with a kids’ menu, or a romantic sunset dinner, this guide has you covered. I’ve included my go-to orders, timing tips, and personal picks to help you make the most of your Maui nights.

Oceanfront Dining in Kāʻanapali, Maui

Wild Mushroom Pizza from Monkeypod Kitchen in Ka'anapali Beach

Monkeypod at Whalers Village

📍 Located at Whalers Village on Kāʻanapali Beach

Imagine sitting on a balcony, the sun setting over the horizon, and a delicious Mai Tai in hand. That’s what you get at Monkeypod Kitchen.

I highly recommend their Garlic Truffle Oil Fries or the Hamakua Wild Mushroom Pizza. Don’t forget to leave room for the Strawberry Cream Pie! We think the Mai Tai at Monkeypod is the best on the island, thanks to its honey lilikoi foam.

Best For: Happy hour cocktails & farm-to-table eats.
Don’t Miss: The Mai Tai with honey-lilikoi foam & hand-tossed wood-fired pizzas.
When to Go: Happy hour (3–5 p.m.) for discounted apps and drinks.

Leilani’s offers stunning ocean views right on Ka’anapali Beach. It’s a Hawaiian mainstay, part of the TS Restaurant group. Their Hula Pie is a must-try, and the Parmesan-crusted Mahi Mahi is delicious. The beach bar is a fantastic spot to unwind with a drink.

Best For: Sunset dinners and date nights, but still relaxed enough for families.
Don’t Miss: The fresh island fish of the day prepared Leilani’s style, and of course, their famous Hula Pie for dessert.

If you’re dreaming of a Maui meal with toes-in-the-sand vibes, Duke’s Beach House delivers. CocoDeck – Modern Cocktails & Island Small Plates

CocoDeck is one of the newest additions to the Kāʻanapali dining scene and a refreshing alternative to the classics. Their happy hour features creative cocktails with tropical twists, along with a rotating selection of island-inspired small plates. It’s got a modern, stylish feel—perfect if you want something a little trendier while still enjoying the laid-back Maui vibe.

💡 CT Tip: Most happy hours in Kāʻanapali run mid-afternoon to early evening (around 3–5 PM). Arrive early to secure the best seats, especially if you want a perfect sunset backdrop.

Family-Friendly Restaurants in Kāʻanapali

Traveling with kids doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice good food—or a good view. Kāʻanapali has plenty of family-friendly restaurants where the menus are flexible, the atmosphere is relaxed, and parents can still enjoy a cocktail. At the same time, the kids dig into something they’ll actually eat.

Hula Grill – Keiki Menu with a View

Hula Grill is a favorite among families because it combines oceanfront dining with a laid-back atmosphere. Their keiki (kids’) menu goes beyond the basics—think fish bites, grilled chicken, and even kid-sized teriyaki steak. Parents can enjoy fresh island fish or a mai tai while little ones stay happy and fed.

CocoDeck – Casual & Contemporary

CocoDeck isn’t just for cocktails—it’s also a surprisingly easy spot for families. The menu features shareable small plates, flatbreads, and a variety of options that cater to picky eaters. Plus, the open-air design means you don’t have to stress if your kids get a little wiggly.

Slappy Cakes (Lahaina)

Slappy Cakes is pancake heaven for kids and parents. Everyone gets their own griddle at the table to cook pancakes with fun mix-ins, such as chocolate chips, macadamia nuts, or bananas. It’s interactive, casual, and guaranteed to make breakfast or brunch a hit.

Captain Jack’s Island Grill

Located in their new location at Sands of Kahana, Captain Jack’s is a laid-back spot that kids love for its pirate theme and relaxed vibe. The menu offers a variety of options, ranging from fish and chips to burgers and tacos, with plenty of kid-friendly choices. Parents will appreciate the open-air setting and casual cocktails while the kids dig in.

Best Seafood in West Maui

If Maui is known for anything, it’s fresh island seafood. In Kāʻanapali and nearby, you’ll find everything from casual fish markets serving poke bowls to fine dining with ocean views. Here are the seafood spots that stand out.

Fish Market Maui – Local & Laid-Back

Located just north of Kāʻanapali, Fish Market Maui is a must for anyone craving poke bowls, fish tacos, or simply grabbing fresh fillets to cook if you’re staying in a condo. It’s casual, quick, and perfect for lunch or a leisurely dinner on the go.

Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar – Sushi & Seafood Favorites

Sansei is one of Maui’s most beloved sushi spots, and for good reason. From creative sushi rolls to Sansei’s Seafood Pasta, and my favorite DK’s Crab Ramen with butter broth. It’s a seafood-lover’s dream. The lively atmosphere makes it a fun night out, and locals love their happy hour.

Honu Oceanside – Waterfront Dining in Lahaina

Honu is all about ocean views and incredible seafood. Sit right on the water’s edge and enjoy dishes like ahi bruschetta, oysters, or their signature fish entrees. It’s a little more upscale but still feels welcoming.

Duke’s Beach House – Classic Maui Seafood & Sunsets

Duke’s is an icon in Kāʻanapali, and it’s especially famous for fresh fish prepared with island flair. The banana leaf steamed fish, shrimp, and seafood risotto are longtime favorites, and you can’t skip their famous Hula Pie for dessert. Go at sunset for the whole experience.

Japengo – Fine Dining with Asian Fusion Flair

Japengo, located at the Hyatt Regency Maui, brings a polished, Asian-inspired take on local seafood. Expect beautifully plated sushi, fresh sashimi, and Hawaiian-style fish dishes. It’s one of the best spots in Kāʻanapali for a romantic seafood dinner.

💡 CT Tip: At many of these restaurants, the menu highlights a “catch of the day.” Ask your server, it’s often locally caught that morning, making it the freshest bite you’ll find.

Final Thoughts on the Best West Maui Restaurants

Dining in Kāʻanapali is about more than just food; it’s sunsets over the Pacific, the warmth of live Hawaiian music, and the simple joy of sharing a meal with people you love.

After nearly two decades of Maui evenings, these are the restaurants I return to again and again, each one holding a special memory of laughter, conversation, and the glow of the island at night.
