Zurich has five main Christmas markets. Each one has its own feel. Some are big and busy. Others are quiet and charming. Here’s what to expect from each — and how to choose the right ones for your trip.

Christkindlimarkt at the Zurich Central Station

This one is impossible to miss — it’s right inside the train station. And yes, there’s a giant tree covered in Swarovski crystals. It’s great for grabbing a bite if you’ve just arrived or need a warm escape from the cold.

CT Tip: Don’t skip the raclette stand tucked behind the tree. It’s the perfect welcome to Switzerland.

The Christkindlmarkt at Zurich’s Hauptbahnhof is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe.

Wienachtsdorf at Sechseläutenplatz – Zurich Viennese Village

This was our favorite Christmas Market in Zurich. It’s set beside the Opera House and just steps from the shores of Lake Zurich. You’ll find food, drinks, shopping, and a warm, festive vibe all in one spot.

The cozy chalet stalls and amazing food vendors made it stand out from all the others. It’s lively, spacious, and has something for everyone.

CT Tip: We had the best raclette here — extra cheese, crispy onions, and pickles on the side. I still dream about it every December. Good to know: It can get busy after dark, so go earlier if you want fewer crowds.

Werdemühleplatz Christmas Market – The Singing Christmas Tree

This one’s famous for the Singing Christmas Tree — yes, an actual tree-shaped stage where choirs perform every evening. It’s small but super sweet, and it’s just off the Bahnhofstrasse (so perfect if you’re already out shopping).

CT Tip: I found this market easily while walking down Bahnhofstrasse. A kids’ choir was singing “Silent Night” in Swiss German. It was one of those unforgettable travel moments, with the children singing and the crowd quietly listening.

Dörfli Weinachtsdorf im Niederdorf – Old Town

This is the most charming market in Zurich. Narrow streets. Old buildings. A slower pace. It feels like Christmas from another time. It’s less flashy but more atmospheric.

Bring cash: Some smaller stalls don’t take cards.

Münsterhof Christmas Market

This market is located in one of the oldest squares in Zurich. It’s right between the Fraumünster Church and some beautiful old buildings. It has a more elegant and local feel, with high-quality gifts and fewer crowds.

You won’t find loud music or packed food lines here. It’s peaceful and perfect for soaking up the atmosphere while browsing handmade crafts and local goods.

CT Tip: We visited just before sunset, and the soft glow of the lights against the historic buildings was magical. It felt more relaxed and upscale than the other markets.

Zürcher Weihnachtsallee

The Zürcher Weihnachtsallee, or Zurich Christmas Avenue, is a spectacular holiday attraction that transforms the Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most famous shopping streets, into a dazzling winter wonderland.

The avenue is illuminated by thousands of sparkling lights and festive decorations, creating a magical atmosphere that captivates locals and visitors alike.

Alongside the spectacular light displays, the Weihnachtsallee features charming market stalls offering a variety of seasonal delights, handcrafted gifts, and gourmet treats, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit.

At one end of the Europaallee at Gustav-Gull-Platz, there is a Fondue Chalet. On the other end, the GlüehwIi Dome Bar is located.

Dome Bar is open Monday through Saturday, 11:00 am – 12:00 am, and Sunday, 11:00 am – 10:00 pm.
Fondue Bar is open Monday through Sunday, from 11:00 am to 12:00 am and 2:00 to 5:00 pm, offering walk-in service and a limited menu. Reservations are suggested at all other times.

Illuminarium at Landesmuseum Zurich

A short walk from the central train station, you’ll find the Landesmuseum Zurich, where the inner courtyard transforms into the mesmerizing Illuminarium during the holiday season.

Thousands of lights decorate the facade of the building, creating a wonderland of illumination. It’s a spectacular sight, perfect for capturing memorable photographs. While you’re here, indulge in the offerings of several food vendors, which add a savory dimension to the experience.

As we explore Zurich’s Christmas wonderland, we come across even more magical attractions that will delight visitors of all ages.

Bahnhofstrasse’s ‘Lucy Lights’

Every year, Zurich’s main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, glows with thousands of sparkling lights called “Lucy.” They’re turned on in late November and stay lit through the holidays. Walking under them feels magical, especially in the evening with Christmas music and shop windows decorated for the season.

The ‘Lucy Lights’ will be switched on at 6:00 p.m. on November 20, 2025, and remain on until January 5, 2026.

Circus Conelli

For a unique holiday entertainment experience, visit Lake Zurich and enjoy Circus Conelli. This circus combines acrobatics, clowns, and live music to create a mesmerizing show that appeals to all ages. It’s a great place to take the kids and immerse yourself in the magic of the circus.

Zurich St. Nicolas Christmas Tram

For young believers aged 4 to 10, the Zurich St. Nicolas Christmas Tram is a delightful treat. Angels and Santa himself take young passengers on a tram ride, reading heartwarming Christmas stories along the way.

The tram departs from the Bellevue tram stops and follows a circular route, eventually returning to its starting point. Tickets for this enchanting journey are in high demand, so be sure to secure yours well in advance at the Jelmoli Marlitram.

Santa Claus Parade (Samichlaus Parade)

On the last Sunday of November, Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse comes alive with the joyful sounds of Santa Claus and his helpers parading through the streets. They distribute gingerbread cookies to delighted children, creating heartwarming memories for families and visitors alike.

Stumbling upon this parade is magical if you’re fortunate enough to be in Zurich on this special day. It’s the perfect way to kick-start the holiday season. November 30, 2025 at 5.00 pm

CT Tip: We were on our way to see the Singing Christmas Tree when the street suddenly started clearing. Curious, we decided to wait. We thought it might be the lighting of the Lucy Lights — but it was even better. We had stumbled upon the Santa Claus parade, completely by chance. Watching the traditions, music, and costumes under the glow of the lights ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

Lichterschwimmen Event

One of Zurich’s most picturesque and heartwarming traditions is the ‘Lichterschwimmen’ event. On December 18, 2025, at 6 pm, hundreds of tiny lanterns are launched from Stadthausquai and set afloat down the Limmat River. This beautiful spectacle, hosted by Zurich Tourism, serves as a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to tourists and locals for their support throughout the year.

As you watch the lanterns drift gently on the water, Zurich Tourism also provides hot punch and sweet treats for onlookers at Weinplatz, making it a warm and memorable experience.
